Oceanside, California lies in the southern region of the state along the coast. The town sits right on Interstate five on the beach south of Camp Pendleton Marine base. This beautiful coastal town is only 30 minutes outside of San Diego. It’s a very scenic ocean town with its wooden pier, and sandy beaches. The city of Oceanside ranks as the third largest city in San Diego County with a population of 183,000 people. The city just keeps growing.
Fr. Junipero Serra, a Spanish Missionary, in 1769 discovered the coastal town on the banks of the San Luis River and built a mission. The Spanish built the Mission San Luis Rey. The current church that stands was built in 1811 and stands as the third church on this location. Today the mission still attracts tourist from all over. Fr. Fermin Lasuen built the original Mission in 1798 and named it after King Louis IX of France. It was the 18th of 21 missions in California. The property at one time covered over 6 acres of land making it one of the largest of all the missions. Today the mission stands as a reminder to Oceanside’s past history. It is a working mission with a functioning church, visitor center and museum.
Historic Oceanside pier happens to be one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast jutting out into the ocean 1,942 feet. Oceanside built the current pier in 1987. It was the sixth pier the city had built and the fifth in this spot. You can see the pier by driving down to Third street. From the pier you can eat at Ruby’s diner, go fishing, or watch boats sail by from Oceanside marina.
There are many things to do in Oceanside. The young and the old do not become bored in this prosperous beach town. Oceanside has a complete array of water recreation for the entire family which includes boating, fishing, surfing, swimming, scuba and any other sport or water activity. In addition people find entertainment and fine eats in the 333 restaurants and numerous night clubs. There is something for everyone in Oceanside.
Ted Robins designed the Championship Arrowood golf course tucked away in the foothills of Oceanside. The course is open to the public and offers stunning water features, challenging bunkers and a variety of elevation changes. LAB, LLC manages this gorgeous course for all levels of golfers. The course boasts 6,721 yardage, a slope of 140 with a rating of 72.9.
